THE City of Sydney is spending the most on its infrastructure for cyclists but its Melbourne counterpart remains streets ahead as a cycle-friendly environment, according to new research released by Melbourne-based Bicycle Network.
The cycling organisation has estimated that the City of Sydney spends $62.34 per head on infrastructure to keep its cyclists happy compared with Melbourne's $12.43.
Bicycle Network's Bike Futures program manager Mike Williamson said Melbourne has many more cyclists than Sydney and estimates 11 per cent of the traffic into the CBD is by cyclists.
Mr Williamson said there were three key benefits from cycling - health, reduced road congestion and a better environment.
