Description
If you are looking for the ultimate in aero performance, this wheel will radically change the way you think about aero-wheel selection. No longer will you have to leave your aerodynamic deep-section wheels aside when race day is windy, these are a true all condition race wheel.

Biomimicry principles were employed in the design of this wheel, with inspiration taken from the irregular shape of the leading edge of humpback whale pectoral fins, which help them maintain speed and manoeuvrability. With undulating 82mm to 77mm deep nodes along the inner circumference of the rim, the Zipp Sawtooth™ rim shape is the result of years of research and thousands of hours of testing in the wind tunnel.

The lower aerodynamic drag and additional crosswind stability available from the Sawtooth design is amplified on deeper section wheels for even greater gains in both performance and rider confidence. This allows riders to remain in their aero position longer, as well as save energy when riding in crosswinds; energy that would have been expended trying to keep the bike going in a straight line with a conventional wheel. That energy can now be used to propel the bike to higher speeds. Moreover, the confidence inspiring stability of the 858 NSW leaves a rider’s mind free to fully focus on the task at hand: Putting power to the pedals.

The 858 NSW achieves this aerodynamic performance through high-frequency wind vortex shedding. Lower frequency shedding produces larger, more powerful vortices. In cycling terms, this unstable situation is often referred to as “buffeting.” The 858 NSW’s undulating Sawtooth rim architecture with HyperFoils™ and HexFin™ ABLC dimples help to stabilize handling in gusting wind by increasing wind vortex shedding frequency. The higher frequency vortex shedding produced by these structures creates an increased number of smaller, less powerful, yet more predictable vortices leading to greater wheel stability. And whether you are riding in a crosswind or not, the Sawtooth rim design of the 858 NSW also delivers a laterally stiffer, lighter, more nimble wheel that accelerates up to speed faster for improved handling in any riding condition.

ImPress™ TECHNOLOGY
In addition to our advanced carbon layup, perfected over 30 years of experience with the material, our ImPress technology keeps both the 858 NSW rim brake and disc brake wheels as light as possible by printing graphics directly onto the rim. ImPress also helps our HexFin ABLC dimples to do their aerodynamic job while elevating the wheel’s visual allure to new heights.

Serviceability
Yet all of this technology does not come at the expense of practicality. The 858 NSW is designed to use external spoke nipples for easy servicing. We’ve also designed the shape of the rim bed to make changing tires simple and quick, even without tire levers. And on the disc brake version of the 858 NSW, we’ve selected a centre locking disc brake interface to make brake rotor installation and removal as fast as possible.

Beyond the Rim
Our NSW-exclusive Cognition™ hubset allows the 858 NSW to roll efficiently whether you are pedalling or coasting. Axial Clutch™ technology allows the freehub’s ratcheting mechanism to deliver half the mechanical drag of conventional three pawl hubs. With less internal hub drag a rider can achieve higher average speeds when coasting, or opt to stop pedalling a moment sooner before entering a corner and bank that wattage for use exiting the corner.

Axial Clutch technology also allows riders to maintain speed through corners that don’t require braking input, thereby increasing corner exit speeds.

Inside the Axial Clutch mechanism we use magnets, rather than steel springs, to move and engage our light weight Metal Injection Moulded (MIM) ratchet rings for unrivalled reliability and consistent operation. With 36 points of engagement that all interlock simultaneously, there isn’t a more secure freehub mechanism on the market. And to ensure that the Cognition hubset is as robust as it is fast, we use Swiss bearings made to our exacting specifications.

Hyperfoil™
Hyperfoil™ is the name given to the individual nodes on Zipp NSW variable depth Sawtooth™ rims. Each of these patented structures features our HexFin™ ABLC dimples that help to stabilize handling in gusting wind by increasing wind vortex shedding frequency. The higher frequency vortex shedding produced by Sawtooth™ creates a greater number of smaller, less powerful, yet more predictable vortices leading to greater wheel stability. This added stability translates into greater rider control, thereby saving energy that is typically expended trying to hold a line in gusting wind. The result is a faster, more confident riding experience whether you are laying down power or descending sinuous mountain roads.

HexFin™ ABLC dimples
HexFin™ ABLC dimples are the hexagonally shaped depressions found at each Hyperfoil™ of our Sawtooth™ shaped NSW rims. The angular shape of each dimple increases boundary layer mixing to help keep airflow attached to the rim for reduced aerodynamic drag and improved stability in crosswinds. To further improve the effectiveness of the hexagonal dimples, they are arranged in fin-shaped clusters made up of variable sized dimples that work in concert with each Hyperfoil™ of a Sawtooth™ rim.

Each Indianapolis-made 858 NSW rim requires 12.5 hours to create and represents a true blending of hand craftsmanship and advanced manufacturing techniques. 858 NSW rims are laced by hand to our Portuguese-made Cognition hubs using Belgian Sapim® CX-Ray spokes and Secure Lock nipples for superior performance and reliability that is made to last.
