How to choose bike brake tools
Most brake jobs, from new pads to a bent rotor, need just a few purpose-made tools. Here's what each one does.
Piston press
Pushes caliper pistons back evenly before fitting new pads, without scratching pistons or contaminating pads.
Caliper alignment
Shims and gauges set an even pad gap while you tighten the caliper, curing most brake rub.
Rotor truing
A truing fork bends a warped rotor back into line, stopping rub and a pulsing lever.
Hose tools
Cutters and needle drivers give clean cuts and properly seated fittings when shortening hydraulic hose.
Bleed kits
A brand-matched bleed kit fixes a spongy lever. Shimano uses mineral oil, most SRAM uses DOT. Never mix them.
Rim brake tools
A cable stretcher holds tension while you tighten the anchor bolt, and pad tools set pad angle.
Finish the job with fresh brake pads, rotors and brake fluid.
