How to choose an open face MTB helmet
An open face (half-shell) helmet is the everyday mountain bike helmet - light, well-ventilated and comfortable for cross-country, trail and most enduro riding. Modern trail helmets have grown to cover more of the back and sides of your head than older XC lids, so you get more protection without the weight or heat of a full face.
Match the helmet to your riding
Pure XC/race helmets prioritise low weight and maximum ventilation. Trail/all-mountain helmets (POC Kortal, Fox Speedframe, Troy Lee A3) add extended rear-and-temple coverage and a sturdier peak for more aggressive riding. If you ride fast, technical descents, lean toward a trail helmet — or consider a convertible helmet or full face for gravity days.
Rotational protection
MIPS and similar systems are designed to reduce rotational force in an angled crash and are worth prioritising. Read our explainer on what a MIPS helmet is and how it works.
Safety ratings and standards
For riding on Australian roads and paths the helmet must meet AS/NZS 2063.
Fit and features
Measure your head just above the eyebrows and match the size chart. A good dial-adjust retention system, plenty of vents, a moisture-wicking liner and an adjustable peak (handy for stowing goggles) all add comfort. Make sure your glasses or goggles sit cleanly with the helmet.
Replace after a crash
The foam is single-use. Also replace your helmet every 3–5 years as materials age.
