The Maxxis Shorty is a mid-spike downhill and enduro tyre designed for loose, wet, and muddy conditions.
It features tall, widely spaced knobs that dig deep into soft terrain, providing exceptional grip and braking traction. While it's a specialist for gnarly conditions, its tread design still offers reasonable predictability when the trails aren't completely submerged.
This is generally regarded as a wet-conditions specialist only, and as a result isn’t as popular for Australian conditions. However if you regularly ride in the wet, especially on steeper trails, or you want to find the edge at a wet DH race when your competitors are slipping and sliding, the Shorty is the tyre for you.
Characteristics: Aggressive grip in mud and loose conditions, excellent braking, good mud shedding, and predictable handling for a spike tyre. Rolls slower than all-round tyres but provides unparalleled confidence in its intended terrain.
Suitable Terrain: Loose, muddy, wet, and soft trails. Ideal for riding in consistently damp Australian conditions, or during the height of the wet season on loamy tracks. Think the deep mud of some Victorian or Tasmanian trails after heavy rain.
Riding Style: Downhill racers, enduro riders, and anyone who frequently encounters extremely loose or muddy conditions and prioritises maximum traction.
Pushys Recommended Combo’s for Maxxis Shorty:
- Shorty Front / Shorty Rear: The ultimate mud-specific setup for maximum grip in the gnarliest conditions.
- Shorty Front / DHR II Rear: A popular choice for riders wanting aggressive front-end mud grip with a slightly faster-rolling and more versatile rear tyre. The centre paddles of the DHR II perform more consistently under braking, while the spikes of the Shorty inspire confidence in muddy corners.
